NJCAA approves emerging sport updates

Charlotte, NC - Following the 2022 NJCAA Convention held in Birmingham, AL, from April 11-15, the NJCAA Board of Regents passed a number of amendments to enhance the national championship experience.  The following changes were made for the association's emerging sports.

The NJCAA Clay Target and Competitive Cheer Committees have approved proposals to delay the first competition season until 2023-24.  The delayed competition start will allow the respective committees additional time to formalize each sport's NJCAA rules while declared teams recruit and build competition rosters.  Women's flag football, men's volleyball, and women's wrestling are on track to begin their first competition season during the 2022-23 academic year.  

The NJCAA Women's Wrestling Committee approved a proposal to permit the following Letter of Intent allowances over the next three academic years: 

• 2022-23 - 33
• 2023-24 - 27
• 2024-25 - 22

The committee also approved a joint proposal with the NJCAA Wrestling Committee to host the women's postseason event in conjunction with the men's tournament beginning with the 2023 season.  The 2023 NJCAA Men's Championship & Women's Wrestling Invitational will be held at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA in early March.
